Bahay Tsinoy has showcased the history and culture of the Chinese-Filipino heritage. Many do not appreciate that the dynastic annals of Chinese immigrants since the tenth century are rich sources of pre-hispanic Philippine history. Tangible remnants of the beginnings of this rich exchange of material culture, language, and trade are ceramics, often the pride in museum and private collections. Since their earliest contacts with China, local inhabitants of Lu-Song, Sansu, Pulilu, Sulu, and Ma-i, have been exchanging trade ceramics with sea shells, pearls, beeswax, abaca, and gold. Selections from the collection of Juan T. Lim, trade ceramics that had bridged peoples and histories, offer glimpses of the wealth of pre-Hispanic Philippines and witness to the Philippine islands' extensive relations with China centuries ago.
Treasure and Heritage opens at Bahay Tsinoy on November 29 and will be ongoing until January 31, 2009.
